By the Light is excited to introduce our Fave 15 Guest Judge for March…drumroll… Amber Privizzini! We are blown away by her stunning images and wanted to get to know a little bit more about her and what makes her tick.
Tell us a little about you and when your photography journey began.
My photography journey began in April of 2011. I found myself loving images through my cell phone and I also had a friend that was getting into photography and I loved what she did so I decided to buy my first camera. I went on Ebay and bought a used canon rebel xt with a kit 18-55. I also bought the 50mm 1.8 and 55-200. I have not looked back since. I have never in my life been so passionate about something before. I live and breath photography. I just knew right away I would always love it so I started a community/just for fun page and the rest is history.
Tell us why, as an artist, natural light photography is your favorite…..(or is it?)
Natural light is my favorite. I love it because I feel I can get so creative and artsy with it. I love to play with light and create different looks. I love shadows and deep pockets of light. And lets just face it backlighting is yummy. Golden hour is delish. I just have to have my natural light. I am a light junkie. I will find it no matter where it is hiding.
Photoshop or Lightroom?
3 years ago I would have said Photoshop 100%. But my my my how things change. I bought Lightroom because I had people asking me to create presets for Lightroom because they loved my photoshop actions. So I bought it and made myself learn it and Now I edit with both on every image. I of course start in Lightroom then finalize my image in Photoshop. I don’t think I could only use Photoshop again.
Have you ever found yourself in a creative slump, and if so, what did/do you do to recover?
Absolutely. I was in such a slump I didn’t even come online for almost 4 months once. I was taking so many clients, shooting what I thought I loved but just wasn’t happy. I got so burnt out I started to hate photography. So I put my camera down, stayed off social media and away from all the chatter. I needed to quiet my brain and find myself. If I didn’t I knew that was the end for me. I was not happy with what I was creating. I was creating for other people. Creating what I thought people wanted to see. But I had something seriously missing. My passion was slowly but surely going away, the quality of my images were not where I wanted them to be. I just wasn’t happy. I knew I wanted to either completely LOVE what I did or not do it. After all, I started this because I had a passion for it, not for the money. So I stopped taking clients, started shooting from my heart, shooting how I saw things. Put that worry away that what if people don’t like my work. I silenced all that loud, started creating for me. And I fell head over heals in love. More than I was when I had started.
What photographers do you admire?
Oh there are just way too many. I never understood how someone can just pick one photographer as their favorite. I follow many and love them all for different reasons. Even people in different genres than I inspire me to no end. I try and list different ones every time I am asked this question because I love so many and they all deserve a little shout out. Just to list a couple. A couple that are really blowing my mind lately are Niki Boon photography and Kelly M Photography.
What’s in your bag?
Canon girl all the way. Canon Mark III, 85mm, 70-200, 35mm 1.4, bobbie pins, paper for a technique I shoot, hair ties, lots of memory cards, lens cleaner, lens pens, wraps, probably some dirt from jumping puddles and what not…
Anything else you’d like to add?
Create from your heart. Don’t worry about what others think. Make yourself happy and create what you love.
