We are proud to announce our second guest judge, Val Spring from The Red Balloon Photography. Val is a Seattle based photographer and is also a Finding the Light workshop alumni. We love the soft and timeless vintage feel to her work, muted but rich color tones, her emotive black and white portraits are uniquely ‘her’. Val’s perspective is organic, we find she truly is capturing life as its happening with her own unique vision that just makes you feel as you are present in that time. She’s incredibly inspiring in a way that encourages us all to look to life for inspiration. Check out her facebook page and adorable blog if you want to view more of her work. We’ve included a small sample below. We were beyond thrilled when she accepted our invitation to answer a few questions and be our guest this month! Be sure to scroll to the bottom and view all of her creative works of heart. xx
Tell us a little about you and when your photography journey began.
I’m originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina but have been living in Seattle for almost ten years now. I started learning photography the year after I graduated from high school and fell completely in love with it during the very first introductory class. I shot almost exclusively in B&W and developed + printed all my work. I knew I wanted to photograph people after taking my favorite college class; “History of Photography II” where we learned about a lot of classic photographers, their styles, their stories, their techniques, etc. Sally Mann, Henry Cartier-Bresson and Richard Avedon’s work really made a huge impact on me. Long story short. I moved to the US and shortly after I quit photography all together. I didn’t have the space, time or resources here for a dark room and I couldn’t imagine sending my work to get processed by someone else (there’s obviously nothing wrong with it, but I was used to doing it all myself and I can be tough to break from my own ways sometimes ;)), so I stopped. Then several years later, my husband gifted me my very first DSLR (a Nikon D90) and it took me a while to even get close to it, but when I finally did, I slowly started falling in love with photography all over again. I still miss my dark room and hope to some day get back to it, but am surely enjoying this journey I’m in. Photography is where my heart is.
If you could express your vision into words, what would they be?
My vision… hmmmm… I guess my vision is photographing life happening. We all see things differently so I try to stay true to the way I see/[perceive things without “tweaking” the reality but surely showing my perspective.
Photoshop or Lightroom?
I use ACR and Photoshop but hear that Lightroom is also so wonderful. I;m just very comfortable with PS. What do you look to for inspiration outside of photography? Life in general. My childhood memories, my girls sisterhood. Light, love, moments, the ocean, wind, movement, time, memories. the feeling of nostalgia. Movies, children book illustrations, watercolor paintings, illustrations, colors, so much.

When you find yourself in a creative slump, what do you do to recover?
Go to art galleries, hang out with my family and friends, Collaborate with another artist, I also try to focus on more personal work and pursue ideas that I sometimes let “marinate” for a while because life gets too busy. Also, listen to myself and take a break if I feel burnt out. Take a little getaway (if possible) and explore different places.
Favorite type of natural light?
Lately I’ve been very inspired by dappled light and by small spots of light. I also LOVE how the light is after it rains.
There are a few days left to submit for this months Favorite 15! Val will narrow down her choices by the end of the day on the 13th and we will post her favorites on the 15th. I am so excited to see what she chooses! At that time we will also announce our new monthly theme.
Peace, love & light. xx.
